PitStop :: Forest Knolls Marketplace

We love stumbling upon a good farm stand along the road. Each time we see one while road tripping we cannot help but stop and stock on fresh veggies, eggs and herbs and anything else the local farms might have harvested that day. We think: it doesn’t get fresher.

U

sually, when folks head north to Point Reyes, they take Highway 1, since its iconic views and curves are a destination in itself. But if you are already familiar with the scenery and want to avoid nausea passengers, you might want to consider taking next time the Highway 101 and turning onto the scenic Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The idyllic street wiggles its way through small towns, green hills, lush meadows, passing by farms and Redwood trees, and yes, it’s almost equally an eye candy as Highway 1. Added bonus: it’s definitely faster, and on a busy weekend you will avoid a very slow traffic going to Stinson Beach.

On our recent trip up north on Sir Francis Boulevard, somewhere around Forest Knolls, an old gas station turned into a farm stand with an adjacent coffee shop caught our eye. We couldn’t help but stop, check the situation, get some coffee and veggies. The coffee shop called, The Pump, is set in an old garage from the 40s and its owner, Cheyenne Young, serves freshly brewed coffee made with beans from Alameda roaster, Palio Coffee, along with some delicious banana bread and pastries from Coast Cafe in Bodega Bay. In the same building, there is also Garageland, a shop carrying vintage items as well as local products. For all of you who love to thrift, you must stop here; they have some very cool antique stuff.

The Farmstand is part of the Marin Community Farm Stand & CSA, which sells fresh produces, fish, cheese and meat from local producers. You can see a full list of their suppliers here. There is just something charming about farm stands along the road set in old gas stations, don’t you think? So next time you are heading up to Point Reyes, take a change of scenery, take Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and make a pit stop Forest Knolls’ cool marketplace.
